Samia Suluhu Hassan, born on January 27, 1960, is a Tanzanian politician who made history as the first female president of Tanzania following the death of President John Magufuli in March 2021. She assumed office on March 19, 2021, after serving as the Vice President of Tanzania since November 2015, making her the first female vice president in the country’s history as well.

Before her presidency, Samia Suluhu Hassan had a distinguished career in public service and politics. She served in various government positions, including as a Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office for Union Affairs, Minister of Tourism, Trade, and Investment for Zanzibar, and Minister of Labour, Youth, Women, and Children Development for Zanzibar. She also served as a Member of Parliament for Makunduchi constituency in Zanzibar.

As Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan played a significant role in Tanzania’s governance and development agenda.
